Do not rush your meditation

Sometimes, I would wake up a bit overwhelmed. When that happened, I generally felt rushed because I was supposed to wake up earlier. Guilt came along.

I started thinking of all the things I had to do and how late I already am but I also had to meditate.

So, I crossed my legs and closed my eyes. However, I am not really meditating. What I am thinking about is all the things I had to do. All I am thinking about is finishing so I could get on with my day, but also tell myself that I had meditated today.

That’s wrong. I did not meditate. If you can relate, you know exactly what I mean. I sat and closed my eyes but I did not really intend to meditate. It was almost like I was pretending. I looked like the part but in my mind, I was just running out the clock.

Every time, you sit down to meditate you are taking a break. You are making the mind more peaceful and more still. Remember that whatever you start the day with tends to follow you along the rest of the day.

I know, I have described a specific scenario but I think a lot of you probably had similar scenarios in your lives. When we wake up and decide to meditate. We should intend for that period of time, whether it’s 1 minute or 30 minutes, to let everything aside and meditate.

Yes, we feel overwhelmed. We feel rushed. We feel guilty and perhaps worst things but it’s not an excuse. On the contrary, that’s when meditation comes in handy. That’s when meditation will help us step up to another level.

When we wake up peacefully and joyfully, meditation is easy and smooth but when we wake up fucked up and restless, that’s when we have an opportunity to calm the mind, tame the monkey mind and slow everything down.

That’s how we can still win the day even if we have woken up defeated. So, for all of you, for all of us, every time you wake up in defeat, slow down, take a few deep breaths, tell yourself it’s all good, it’s ok for 30 seconds, in a calm soothing manner then start meditating.

Make this a habit when things get turbulent and you will see how much better you will feel. Wake up, soothe yourself and meditate.
